Because of serious financial problems, United Artists was forced to close its international operations in 1982/83, including Japan. It is common knowledge that this is a difficult task, if not handled professionally and adroitly, taking into consideration the unique labor situation in Japan. I am happy to say that Mr. Nevins’ advice and guidance was instrumental in the formulation and execution of a “uniquely Japanese” approach to this closure. Through lengthy discussions, generous early retirement benefits and serious outplacement efforts, United Artists of Japan was able to smoothly effect closure, with the minimum amount of disturbances and disruptions. I can personally recommend that any company that is planning to enter or leave the Japanese market, would benefit greatly from Mr. Nevins’ advice.
